What senior living looks like in Buda

Buda is unusual in a way that works in your favor.

Only about seven percent of Buda's residents are sixty-five or older, roughly half the rate for Hays County as a whole. This is a young town, median age in the thirties, full of families who moved out here for space and schools and now commute up I-35. Which means most of the people who call us about Buda are not seniors living in Buda. They are adult children living in Buda, trying to figure out how to get a parent closer.

That is a genuinely good position to be in, and here is why.

Everything is inside a ten-mile box

Buda has two licensed communities in town, both offering assisted living and memory care. It also has a full-service hospital, Baylor Scott & White Buda, which opened in 2019 and was the first hospital the city ever had. Ascension Seton Hays, the highest-acuity hospital in the county with a Level II trauma center and stroke certification, is about ten minutes south in Kyle.

Put that together and it means something rare: the emergency room your parent goes to, the discharge conversation, and the community you tour can all happen within ten miles of your house. Compare that to a parent placed north of Austin, where every single visit means crossing the whole downtown stretch of I-35.

If your parent needs something Buda's two communities cannot provide, the search widens gently rather than dramatically. Kyle is under ten minutes and has several communities including both assisted living and memory care. South Austin, around Onion Creek and Southpark Meadows, is ten to fifteen minutes north. San Marcos is about twenty. None of that requires crossing downtown.

One naming trap worth knowing

One of Buda's two communities has operated under two different names, and both names are still circulating online with separate directory listings. Families regularly come to us believing there are three or four options in Buda when there are two buildings. Small thing, but it wastes a weekend.

What Buda does not have

There is no skilled nursing facility in Buda, no continuing care retirement community, and no service-rich independent living community. The 55+ apartment community on FM 967 is exactly that, apartments, with no care and no meals, though you will see it listed as independent living on directory sites.

So if your parent is coming out of a hospital stay and needs short-term rehab before anything else, that happens outside Buda. And if what your parent actually wants is an independent apartment with dining and activities and a nurse down the hall, that is a Kyle or south Austin search.

Getting around without driving

The city runs a free curb-to-curb transportation service for seniors, expanded in 2025 to cover the areas just outside city limits, specifically because there is no regional public transit out here. For a parent who has stopped driving but is not ready to leave home, that program is often the difference between staying put another year and moving now. Ask us about it, and confirm current eligibility and hours with the city directly, since the program has been running as a pilot.

On cost

Entry pricing at Buda's communities generally starts below the national median for assisted living, and suburban Hays County tends to price under central Austin. But base rates never tell the whole story, because care is assessed and billed on top of the apartment. We will get you the real all-in number for the communities that actually fit, which is usually a different number than the one on the brochure.

One thing worth setting expectations on: nearly all of the senior living inventory serving Buda was built within the last five to eight years. You will not find communities here with thirty-year reputations, because they do not exist yet. That is not a knock, it just means references and current staffing matter more than history when you evaluate a place.
